$24 for the Island of Manhattan

"....The area that is now Manhattan was long inhabited by the Lenape. In 1524, Lenape in canoes met Giovanni da Verrazzano, the first European explorer to pass New York Harbor, although he did not enter the harbor past the Narrows. It was not until the voyage of Henry Hudson, an Englishman who worked for the Dutch East India Company, that the area was mapped. Hudson came across Manhattan Island and the native people living there on September 11, 1609, and continued up the river that bears his name, the Hudson River, until he arrived at the site of present day Albany.

A permanent European presence in New Netherland began in 1624 with the founding of a Dutch fur trading settlement on Governors Island. In 1625 construction was started on a citadel and a Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, later called New Amsterdam (Nieuw Amsterdam). Manhattan Island was chosen as the site of Fort Amsterdam, a citadel for the protection of the new arrivals; its 1625 establishment is recognized as the birth date of New York Cit.

In 1626, Peter Minuit acquired Manhattan from native people in exchange for trade goods, often said to be worth $24.....'

One of those perfect days

Wake up and spend extra half an hour in a warm bed just slowly waking up. Strong coffee and another hour of doing absolutely nothing later you finally leave the house. It is nice and almost warm, hard to believe it is the end of December. Take a long walk with P and stop by to do your nails.

After quick lunch you're off to the Whitney Museum. On the third floor you find Kara Walker exhibit. Groupings of art work featuring paintings, drawings, collages, shadow-puppetry, and video animations are provocative, bit mind mingling. Racial and gender bias, discrimination, monstrous representation of human relations.

Beth Campbell also catches your attention. Mirror or a plain glass, the child's mind perspective and the old mind set in its ways.

"Stupid people should not breed" written on a bench.

You have dinner at Payard. P orders Sirloin Steak with Pommes Frites, Béarnaise Sauce and Green Peppercorn Saucesteak and you have Venison with Juniper Berries, Celery Root Purée, Baby Turnips, Chestnuts and Black Trumpet Mushrooms Huckleberry-Venison Sauce. Bordeau and Pinot Noir complete the feast. For dessert you choose Dark Bittersweet Chocolate Soufflé with Pistachio Ice Cream. P. surprises you with Cartier Ballon Bleu.

Back in NYC

You fly back on Christmas day, easily getting on stand by half empty flight. Wednesday at the office is quiet. Have dinner with F and go to see Charlie Wilson's war. Julia looks odd wearing big blond wig; her southern accent is amusing. Get back home pass midnight and fall asleep immediately.

On Thursday you meet B. after work for couple of drinks.

Sweet Home Chicago

You leave your office at 5pm on Friday and arrive in Chicago at 1.30am....God bless the magazine stand at Newark that kept you somewhat busy for 5 hours. Honestly, when you finally sat in your seat the idea of strangling the innocent flight attendant crossed your mind. By the way American Airlines, were the reindeer hats really needed?- her job is sad enough.

R and G come to your house for dinner, Sat night. You shop, you cook, you manage to put food on a table. Having a spacious kitchen is a welcomed change. You actually enjoy cooking. Once in a while it is nice to chop, boil, fry, and serve. You still love and adore Manhattan delivery system, but appreciate what Chicago has to offer.

The Corporate Soiree

Time to put on a black dress and see your work mates dance. Quite lovely ordeal to your surprise. Pretty surroundings, open bar the whole night, dinner, and car service home. Tempted to go on a dance floor, but refuse the temptation. After several glasses of wine any swirl could be deadly.

3 day weekend

Friday evening you meet your friends at the Eleven Madison to celebrate the Holidays. Table for 6, champagne, wine, foie gras, venison, dark chocolate desert. Great company of your friends, laughter, beautiful surroundings, attentive service.

On Monday you dump two months of your rent in a pocket of Burberry, LaPerla, Barneys, and Coach. You have 29 coats at home already, did you really need two more? Ridiculous, really. LaPerla at this point is just another collectible item. Coach you don't even like, yet can't resist the bargain. Silly.

Glad you have V around. Makes shopping so much more fun. Couple of glasses of wine later, you consider the money "well spent".

Off you go to the Opera

Iphigenie en Tauride

"...Before the Trojan War, Agamemnon gathered the Greek armies at the port of Aulis. The goddess Diane sent unfavorable winds to prevent the Greeks from Sailing. Her oracle set a condition for Agamemnon: to earn the right to sail forth and destroy an innocent country, he would have to sacrifice his own daughter. Agamemnon accepted these terms and killed his young daughter Iphigenie on the altar.

In his play Iphigenia in Tauris Euripides imagines that Diane plucked Iphigenie from that altar and delivered her to a temple in distant Tauride, where Iphigenie began to serve the enemy Scythians as Diane's high priestess - all the while Iphigenie's family believing her dead...."

The Holiday Spirit

You have a splendid, or at least what it seemed at that time, idea of taking a look at the Xmas tree at the Rockefeller Plaza. Afterall it is the holiday season and tree viewing is in order. You forget that literally everybody else who's just happened to visit New York during the Holidays is on a way there also. People are moving in glacier's pace, kids, strollers, dogs, happy couples, sad couples, everybody in pursuit of a perfect photo. You are exhausted from fighting the crowds and in need of a drink. V is waiting in front of the wine bar. The evening finally is looking better. You get a table quickly and order wine along with cheese sampler. Chat away for the next couple of hours.

Sunday is quiet. You run your errands as usuall. B calls and you join her on a short shopping trip. Start with Crate and Barrel, stroll through Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Prada.

So many pretty things.

Lovely

You wake up at 7.30am and 15 minutes later you stand in front of Equinox waiting for the doors to open. You're not sure where is the energy coming from, you still should be in bed wrapped in warm sheets. An hour later, you reward yourself with large coffee, cheese and almond croissant followed by Le Pain Quotidien's organic baguette with Irish butter.

F. stops by without announcements. You don't have much time to chat, trying to get ready for dinner with the girls tonight.

Slip on a black dress and new pair of brown boots, leave the apartment in hurry to meet C. You both catch a cab and head off to Lower East side. Y. is already at the bar enjoying her glass of champagne. You see B. coming through the door.

It is lovely to have your friends around. You get to your table and order. Let the night begin.

The weekend is here

Friday passes in light speed. Breakfast at the office arrives around 9am. You take omelet, waffle soaked in maple syrup, bagel with butter, bowl of fruits, and small croissant for a good measure. The only justification you have is that is all free provided by your employer. Besides, breakfast is not only imperative but also helps you loose weight in a long run, you reason with yourself. Starbucks vente carries you through half of a day. You are busy and love it.

You leave and get home just in time to shower, change, and head out for dinner. You meet with D., L's friend. Have a nice conversation, feel uncomfortable at times, but try to enjoy the evening.

Love in The Time of Cholera

After 11 hours of sleep you wake up at 10am. The only thing you look forward to getting old is that hopefully you will need less sleep. Waking up early to get to the office really interferes with your biological clock.

You get ready and off to Pastis for brunch. To your joy you are offered one of the best tables. Coffee is welcomed with great appreciation, the warm, strong liquid finally wakes you up. P. orders eggs you yield to pancakes with fruits. P. chats away, you people watch. Hours later you emerge into the streets and pull a map out of your purse.

The next couple of hours are spent navigating West Village and Soho in pursuit of real estate. One open house after another; you open closets, compare sizes, and wonder if any space could feel like home.

After quick stop to purchase Christmas tree you get home. P naps, you go to Equinox.

In the evening you stop for a quick bite at 360. Countless calories later (kobe beef burger, sweet potato fries, cobb salad, apple pie with ice cream, espresso) you're ready for a nap. You go to the movies, instead.

"Love in The Time of Cholera"; you watch the movie with pleasure, glad that you've had a chance to read the book earlier. You love Gabriel Garcia Marquez, his writing is incredible.

At 11 am sharp you find your seat at the Madison Square Garden ready to enjoy the Cirque de Soleil, Wintuk. Not so thrilled with the crowds and screaming kids, but quite taken by the performers.

Two hours later on a way home you browse Borders and pick up couple of books, one on wine, the second you find in travel section. Get home, change and go for a work out.

In the evening P. picks up couple of bottles of red and indian food order. You watch Holiday with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant while savoring the dinner.

One of the nicest fall days in New York. You go for a long walk with P. amazed how beautiful Central Park is. Endless paths, falling leaves, unexpected entainterners, oasis in the middle of maddness.

Thanksgiving dinner is at Zoe. Fois gras, venison, sweet potatoe puree with chestnuts, pumpkin tart along with great glass of pinot noir and espresso. Who needs turkey.

The timing is off

You know when they say, timing is everyting? Well, today the timing is definitely off. The morning goes fast, unproductive and lazy. You look forward to brunch, yet you decide to leave before you get seated. Annoyed by trains not running on schedule, annoyed by cab driver who is moving in glacier's pace yapping on a phone. You have irrelevant conversation with B.

M. calls and ivites you to an event at the InterContinental Hotel. Short notice is not something you appreciate. You make an effort to put on a black dress, apparently dress code is obligatory. Usually you love dressing up, this time it is a chore. You meet with M. to make an effort. You hope to enjoy your time, yet again, you are somewhat annoyed.

Get home, glad the day is over. Now you just need to straithen up your appartment, here is another thing you wish you didn't have to do.

Shop, Eat, and Admire

10 hours of sleep. Love it. Wake up rested, finally. Slowly sip coffee and flip through couple of magazines. New York Times calls at 11am, they're nice enough to stop by your place and pick up a key to the front door. You hate wet newspapers and you are not lucky enough to have a doorman. Fortunately every problem has a solution.

You change into your work out clothes and show your face at Equinox. You do your best to force some sweat out of your body.

V. calls wondering where you at. You planned on spending a day together. After you do your nails next stop is Searle, dependable Searle, you never leave empty handed. V. tries on pair of pants you find a winter coat. She likes the coat also. Two credit cards are rung, two coats leave the store, two happy gals continue with their afternoon.

THe Neue gallery hosts Klimt this month. You love him and you love the gallery. Short cab ride later you get the tickets and enjoy the exhibit. Afterwards you take a table at Cafe Sabarsky. V. orders wine.

Friday night

Friday you leave the office at 6pm and run home. Well, run home right after you pay for yet another pair of boots. The shoe addiction is deadly; frankly very soon you might have to use the refrigerator and the oven to accomodate your purchases. The boots are so lovely, though. Soft, brown, italian leather, just right length and shape. They make you happy.

New shoes and weekend ahead. As soon as you open the door and are ready to take your clothes off, F calls. You hesitate for a moment. Tea and a movie at home or series of drinks and socializing. You figure there will be plenty of tea and movies when you're old and wrinkled.

Quick change of clothes and you shut the door behind you. The pinot noir warms you up, F. chats about everything and nothing, and you nibble on food.

Where does the time go?

The weekend passes in light speed. Between running errands and shopping not much else happens. You sleep late, make the best attempt to work out, and spend your paycheck - what's the point of keeping it - afterall the dollar is falling down to hell..... Have a long conversation with your Mom and listen to your sister reporting the daily ups and downs of her life. You bless the food delivery system in the city, countless choices at any time of day and night. Weather is still surprisingly warm, encouraging long walks. You meet B for espresso accompanied by plate of sweets and make your way to Saks Fifth where she's buying evening dress for your upcoming benefit dance at the Metropolitan Museum in couple of days.

On Tuesday you go to Azza for champagne and dancing. Sinful night at the beginning of the week. You know you shouldn't stay up late, yet you do.

Macbeth

Macbeth, Shakespeare's probably darkest work, or at least it seems so. Murder, blood, witchcraft and madness - excellent choice for Halloween's night.

You arrive 15 minutes early and watch the crowds while waiting for your friends. There is an old lady hunched over wearing haloween masquerade mask, middle age tuxedo and bowtie men, two ladies that seem to just leave the airport with suitcaces in their hands, young college couple and six foot skinny model. Only in New York....

Don't you just love the city?

For the love of wine and pizza

You wake up happy. Maybe the 9.45am versus 6.30am was a good reason enough to cheer up your morning. Big cup of coffee and a magazine later you are ready to face the world. First stop the Equinox. Satisfied and motivated by scale reading you do an hour of intense cardio plus half an hour of weights, for a good measure. Stop by the cafe and order beeets, parsley, spinach, carrot, and cucumber juice. Not the most gratifying choice, but surely healthy one.

You meet V in the afternoon get your nails done and after short shopping stop at Searle you arrive at the Accademia di Vino, relatively new wine bar. You sit and start with bottle of wine. Good bottle of red and good conversation, you chat about nothing and everything. Gorgonzola cheese, walnuts, and apple salads arrive. Perfect combination of tangy, crunchy, and crispy. The bottle is half emply. Pumpkin, extra thin and crispy pizza lands on your table. You wouldn't think pumpkin belongs on the pizza and yet the pairing is surprisingly delicious. You finish with espresso and ricotta cheesecake with slices of plum.

And why not?

It is 7pm and you are still at the office, wondering if it is a good idea at all to go out tonight. After all, you are quite tired, it is not even the middle of a week yet, and your rational mind urges you to go home. Curiosity, on the other hand, puts up a fight. How can you resist good conversation, glass of wine, and bit of dancing? Besides, you've already RSVPed, and V will be waiting for you. You perk up and shush your ever so responsible mind. Let's toast to the new beginnings

M is not happy. She is not satisfied with your life choices. You listen patiently and stare at the espresso maker. You nod several times and watch the dark, fragrant liquid slowly drip into the small cup. You have no strength to negotiate and defend yourself. You wisely choose your words and smoothly navigate through the conversation.

The day passes by quickly in typical Saturday fashion. Weekly chores and errands take up half of a day. You call for the laundry pick up, place quick lunch order, venture outside to do your nails. You plan to work out, but quickly cancel that thought and shop instead. Feel guilty, yet again.

In the evening you meet V for dinner at the Wallse. You spend the next three and a half hours chatting and forcasting the future. She is starting a new chapter in her life; the new beginnings with all the fear, hope, and excitemen that come along. You are glad to have here to share with you the blissful and ever so changing life on the fantasy island of Manhattan.

Evening at the Carnegie Hall

After two days of bliss you are back in Manhattan. It is getting late. You confirm your dinner reservation, rummage through your closet in search of something to wear. Pull one of the countless black dresses - always appropriate, always dependable. The restaurant is not your favorite one, but it is only block away from the Carnegie Hall - tonight's destination. You don't care for the interior - wall mirrors, Lalique crystal wall sconces, bronze sculptures, pink granite.... Your mother might appreciate it, you don't. The waiter takes your order. You choose the appetizer tasting (mostly Foie Gras, Salmon, more Salmon, and Caviar), Short Ribs for main course, cheese flight, and chocolate tort. The selection is good tasting, but not unforgettable. You doubt you'll return.

Always look at the bright side of life

Quest for the Holy Grail, men in tights, killer rabbits, sexy divas, pompous french, and flying cows - welcome to Spamalot on Broadway. Tuesday is a new date night. P gets the tickets, you come along. The Spamalot is not your first choice, but you enjoy it regardless.

Before the show you stumble upon Vice Versa. You like the ambiance - elegant and modern space with petite garden in a back. Takes you a while to negotiate table with the hostess. P's shaking his head, he knows the "just right" table location is essential to your dining happiness. You start with butternut squash soup, followed by pan seared codfish with lobster mashed potatoes, and finish with apple and lemon cake with ice cream. You find food bit overpowered by heavy spice mix and free flow of olive oil. On the upside, the staff is attentive and cordial.

Let them eat Oysters

The Oyster Bay, NY welcomes the 24th Annual Oyster Festival. Festival organizers adopted a no-alcohol policy that established the festival as a family-fun event, enough said. Screaming kids run with their faces dripping with sticky lard covered with powdered sugar. Daddies with bellies hanging out of their pants hold their make-uped and permed significant others. Long lines form for oysters and lobsters served on thin paper plates with fountain soda in metal jars. Pretzels - big, bread loaf big, warm, and soaked in mustard attract the crowds.

You pause, look around, and spot an elephant. Enormous Elephant's ass to be exact. He refuses to cooperate. Dares to be different, you understand.

Shopping tents - handmade jewelry, soy candles, flavored nuts, nail files with crystals, funky knitted hats.... Fudge anyone?

You thank God for your friends who made this day memorable. Special thanks to J. who dares to bring forbidden bottle of wine and home made apple pie. Without them you would consider this day a total waste.

Penn Station, big smile.

The Rape of Europa

It is a lovely day - breeze of autumn's cool air with sunshine's warm touch. You have a date. Date with New York. Wake up late and dillydally in bed wrapped in warm blankets. Smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the room, NY Times is in front of your door. The weekend begins.

You take yourself to the movie theatre to see "The Rape of Europa" - documentary about Nazi programmed destruction and theft, followed by miraculous survival of European art during World War Two. Must see for anyone who is interested in art and history. Hitler's storm through Poland, France, Russia, and Italy - in quest for control, dominance, and acquisition of territorial rights along with attempt to burglarize the most coveted art pieces. Crave for power and sophistication by a man who simply didn't stand a chance.

Self esteem issues?

She visits the Met

The Met is your oasis. It goes with any weather and outfit. It soothes you when the world falls apart and inspires you when new ideas are called for. For serious gossip and catch ups, the rooftop offers unlimited supplies of hard liquor and dazzling view of Manhattan skyline.

This time of a year the Metropolitan Museum of Art proudly hosts Rembrandt and Dutch art exhibit. You've been invited to the opening, and you went again. You've paused in front of Flora painting; the plate next to it reads "....flowers, youth, beauty, and love don't last forever..."

You wholeheartedly agree with inevitable passing of flowers, youth, and beauty, but shouldn't love be excluded from this equation?

When the errands lucky stars align

What type of facial would you like Miss? The Eastern European women in her late 20s asks you in polite manner. “Pick what you think is best”, the worst answer you might ever offer. She scrubs, she massages, she extracts, she steams. It is not good. You know tomorrow your face will go on strike and break out. Always does unless it receives the first class treatment. You know you are not coming back. “Thank you, it was great” you lie through your teeth. You soak in jaccuzzi wondering how many people were there before you - germs mixing pot. You spent half an hour in sauna for a good measure.

In the afternoon you run errands marathon. Surprisingly, every single stop is as smooth as ever, you thank your lucky stars. Take quick photos for your soon to expire passport. Hit Kinko's to copy couple of documents and FedEx an important letter that changes your life plan. Linger in Sephora, this time choosing Bare Minerals in Fair and Vincent Longo Water Canvas foundation in Porcelain (one of them has to work), Smashbox Photo Finish primer, Dior lip gloss #317, Vincent Longo lipstick in Glow, Dr. Hauschka cleansing cream - Fresh Sugar deodorant completes your spending spree. You storm through Container Store getting hangers and boxes. Sit for a minute at Hale & Hearty savoring pumpkin soup. Stop by the wine store and stock up. Take a deep breath, slow down, walk into Karen's nail salon, have your nails painted "undefined red".

Why undefined?

Pain au chocolate and champagne

Pain au chocolat and cup of cafe macchiato effectively puts your 3 day detox resolution in jeopardy. Pain au chocolat wins over egg whites and tofu, yet again. To make up for your sinful eating habits you make your way to Equinox for Pilates class with James. You follow his instructions religiously, hardly being able to catch your breath. Sweat runs down your back, your abs ache. You stare at the wall clock counting every second.

In the evening you put your make up on and slip on LBD; heals complete your outfit. You meet B. in front of W Hotel Times Square and enter Whiskey Bar. Glass of champagne, sushi, gimlet, cheese, gimlet, grapes...You chat and people watch. You get drenched on a way home.

Temperature drops. Fall is finally here.

Deep cleaning

There are days were deep apartment cleaning is simply not only desired but also imperative. Slowly you work through every single drawer, tenaciously point hangers in your closet into the same direction, coordinate by colors, throw out mismatched cups. You fill four black garbage bags wondering why do you have so many things that apparentely don't matter.

You manage to squezze hour long work out at the Equinox and promise yourself to use your membership more often. Have a glass of wine with not so healthy dinner commiting yourself to 3 day detox (organic foods, green tea, and mindful eating).

Can you keep a commitment?

Sunday Brunch
